ANNAPOLIS, MD. 11-02-07---More than 500 supporters of the horse racing industry attended Friday’s rally on Lawyers Mall in front of the State House. The Maryland Jockey Club cancelled live racing and simulcasting on November 2 as previously scheduled, so that employees, horsemen and racing fans could be present at the “Save The Maryland Horse Racing Industry” rally which was held prior to the state legislature hearings at 11 a.m. on various proposals to bring slot machines to Maryland.
The fate of the Maryland horse racing and breeding industry has reached a crisis point because of unfettered competition from neighboring racing states which are prospering from video lottery terminal revenue. In the past few years, racing dates and purses have been slashed, numerous stakes races have been cancelled and the owners of stallions and broodmares have abandoned Maryland in record numbers in search of the greener pastures of neighboring slots-rich environments.
The lost racing day will be made up on Wednesday January 2, 2008.
