BALTIMORE, 05-21-10---The Pimlico trainer and jockey titles will be decided on the final day of the spring meeting with multiple contenders in both categories. The 20-day stand concludes on Saturday with a 10-race card. First post is 1:10 p.m.
Dale Capuano leads Scott Lake by one in the trainer standings, 9-8, with Chris Grove and Damon Dilodovico two back. Capuano, who captured the Pimlico spring meet nine times during a 10-year period from 1996-2005, will saddle four starters on Saturday’s card, none higher than 4-1 on the morning line including Dangerous Ice, the prohibitive favorite in the second.
Lake has a pair of starters in the Saturday finale, while Dilodovico has three starters on the program. Grove has two runners in the Shine Again Stakes but will not be able to reach the top spot.
The jockey race is even more confusing with a handful of riders with title aspirations. Horacio Karamanos won this afternoon’s 5th race aboard Hesagoldmine to take move ahead of Eric Camacho atop the standings with 11 victories. Neither has a Saturday mount.
“I am so happy,” said Karamanos, who has three riding titles at Laurel Park since 2002. “I have had a lot of seconds and thirds too, so my horses ran well. I had been gone for a year and a half (to ride in his native Argentina) so it took time to regain business. We are getting on good horses again and I expect to have a good meet at Colonial.”
The eight-week Colonial Downs meeting begins next Saturday, May 29 and ends Wednesday, July 21.
Julian Pimentel and Sheldon Russell are two behind Karamanos while J.D. Acosta is within striking distance. Pimentel and Russell are each named on six horses tomorrow. Acosta has four mounts.
