Position: Association Veterinarian

Reports to: Senior Veterinarian
Location: Laurel Park, Laurel, Maryland & Pimlico Racecourse, Baltimore, Maryland

Position Summary

The Association Veterinarian will work with the Senior Veterinarian and Association Veterinarian team to ensure equine safety during training and racing at Laurel Park and Pimlico Racecourse. On-the-job training and ongoing support are provided for all positions. This full-time position offers competitive, salaried pay and an opportunity to work at world-class Thoroughbred racing facilities in Laurel and Baltimore, Maryland.

Association Veterinarian Duties

  • Observe morning training sessions and afternoon racing to ensure safety.
  • Conduct soundness examinations and evaluate lameness.
  • Follow veterinarian procedures in accordance with 1/ST Horse Care protocols.
  • Support Senior Veterinarian as needed including sample collection or testing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited US college required. New and recent graduates are welcome to apply.
  • Exposure to horse racing industry preferred, but not required.
  • Membership in the AAEP preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a Maryland Veterinary License
  • Ability to obtain a Maryland Racing Commission License
  • Demonstrated expertise in making sound and valid decisions in high pressure situations.
  • Must be able to work effectively with peers, staff members, and regulatory agency personnel.
  • Strong computer skills to include effective working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.

Licenses, Certifications, Registration:

Requires a Maryland Racing Commission License as well as Maryland Veterinary license (or ability to be licensed in the state).

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl regularly throughout every workday. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus, including using binoculars to see objects at a distance; or decipher minute differences between objects.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risks associated with being outdoors such as extreme weather conditions (cold, heat, rain, storms). The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, including second-hand environmental smoke, dirt, and fumes. The noise level in the work environment varies from light to moderate. As a large animal vet, the individual must take extreme safety precautions due to the inherent risk of injury.
