Laurel, Pimlico Primary Home for 2021 MATCH Series

Live Racing Returns to Laurel Thursday

BALTIMORE – Beginning with Preakness (G1) weekend in mid-May at Pimlico Race Course and concluding the day after Christmas at Laurel Park, Maryland racetracks will host 20 of 24 races in the newly configured Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championship (MATCH) Series for 2021.

The MATCH Series, which has proved popular with horsemen since returning to the racing calendar in 2018 following a 16-year hiatus, was shelved in 2020 amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that also threatened a 2021 return.

BALTIMORE – The Stronach 5 returns Friday with races from Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

Friday’s sequence includes three turf races – two maiden turf races from Gulfstream and Golden Gate and a competitive 10-horse $32,000 claiming event from Santa Anita.

BALTIMORE – The Stronach 5 will feature five competitive races from four tracks along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout when it begins at approximately 4:30 p.m.

BALTIMORE1/ST and the Maryland Jockey Club announced today that Preakness 146 will run with a socially distant, limited crowd of 10,000 in attendance when it returns as the second jewel of the Triple Crown Series on Saturday, May 15 to Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The decision to include fans was made in consultation with and by approval of local and state health and governmental authorities and includes the approval for a limited number of fans for Black-Eyed Susan Day on Friday, May 14.

More Than 2,200 Winners in Stronach 5

Friday’s Winning Tickets Returns $313

BALTIMORE – Friday’s Stronach 5, which featured a carryover of $154,931, had 2,214 winning tickets, each returning $313.30.

There was $612,155 of new money wagered Friday. The Stronach 5 featured races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields and an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

Pool to Grow in Excess of $500,000

LAUREL, MD – With a carryover of $154,931.69 in the Stronach 5, Friday’s pool is expected to grow in excess of $500,000 while featuring races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5, which continues to show a strong return on investment, will begin Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Laurel’s eighth race.

Accepting Entries for Frutkoff, Woods Preakness Awards

BALTIMORE - The Maryland Jockey Club announced today it is accepting entries for the David F. Woods Memorial Award, presented annually to the writer of the best Preakness story from the previous year, and the Jerry Frutkoff Photography Award, presented to the photographer of the best Preakness picture from the previous year.

Recipients of the David F. Woods Award and Jerry Frutkoff Award will be honored during Preakness week, May 12-15.

BALTIMORE – Featuring the return of the $1 million Preakness Stakes (G1) to its familiar position as the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, the Maryland Jockey Club will offer 16 stakes, 10 graded, worth $3.25 million in purses over Preakness weekend, May 14-15, at Pimlico Race Course.

BALTIMORE – There were no winning tickets in Friday’s Stronach 5, which means there will be a carryover Friday, March 12 of $154,931.69.

The Stronach 5, which features an industry-low 12-percent takeout, featured races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields. There were no winning favorites. The lowest payoff in Friday’s Stronach 5 was $13.40. The highest was $43.20.
