Ben's Cat Wins Mister Diz Stakes For Fourth Straight Year

BALTIMORE, 04-06-13--- Make that four years in a row for Ben’s Cat in the $75,000 Mister Diz Stakes. The Jim Stable star from the King Leatherbury barn carried Julian Pimentel to an easy 1-3/4 length victory over the firm turf at Pimlico Race Course.

“Four years in a row, that’s quite rare,” said Leatherbury, who owns, trains and bred Ben’s Cat. “He is amazing.”

BALTIMORE, 04-05-13— The Maryland Jockey Club (MJC) today announced the selection of Japan as the Host Nation of the 2013 International Pavilion at the Preakness Stakes.  With this designation, the Embassy of Japan and Ambassador Kenichiro Sasae will serve as Honorary Hosts welcoming distinguished guests and dignitaries to historic Pimlico Race Course for the annual running of the Preakness Stakes.  

“In just three years, the International Pavilion has become the premier destination at Pimlico on Preakness Day and we are delighted to partner with the Embassy of Japan and Ambassador Sasae in bringing the international community to the annual running of the Preakness,” said Tom Chuckas, Maryland Jockey Club president.

McCarthy Continues Winning Ways, Riding Three To Victory On Opening Day Of Pimlico Spring Meet

BALTIMORE, 04-04-13---On January 1, apprentice rider Trevor McCarthy rode four winners on opening day of the Laurel Park winter meet. This afternoon, the 18-year-old visited the winners’ circle three times on opening day of the Pimlico Race Course spring meeting.

McCarthy was first aboard Christmas Flys ($6.40-third), Go Allie ($12-fourth) and Granted Ruler ($12.60-seventh).

Ben's Cat Looks For Fourth Straight Mister Diz Stakes Score Saturday Afternoon

BALTIMORE, 04-04-13---Two turf stakes, the Dahlia for fillies and mares and the Mister Diz for Maryland-bred sprinters highlight the 10-race card on opening Saturday at Pimlico.

The five furlong Mister Diz goes as race seven and is headed by Ben’s Cat (4-5), the three-time defending champion of the race. The reigning star of the King Leatherbury stable is 11 for 17 on the grass with career earnings exceeding $1.35 million.

The Parker’s Storm cat offspring will be making his seasonal debut in the Mister Diz, just as he did a year ago. Among his five wins in 2012 were victories in the Parx Dash Handicap, the Turf Monster Stakes (G3), the Maryland Million Turf Sprint and the Fabulous Strike Stakes.

BALTIMORE, 04-02-13---The Maryland Jockey Club today announced Phil Vassar will headline a “Get Your Preak On” kickoff concert at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Saturday, May 11. The 138th running of the Preakness Stakes (G1), the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, will be held at historic Pimlico Race Course the following Saturday.

Tickets will go on-sale Friday, April 5 at https://www.piersixpavilion.com/. Ticket prices range from $25 to $60.

Maryland Jockey Club Auditioning Frank Carulli Replacements Next Week

LAUREL, MD. 03-13-12---Frank Carulli, the Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park handicapper and racing analyst since January 2002, will be leaving the company at the conclusion of the Pimlico spring meet, which ends June 8. Carulli will be relocating to Las Vegas.

Next week (March 20-23) at Laurel Park, the Maryland Jockey Club will have four guest handicappers vie for Carulli’s on-air role as the Pimlico and Laurel television host.
