Maryland Thoroughbred Racing Unites With 10-Year Agreement

LAUREL, MD. 12-14-12---The Maryland Jockey Club (MJC), the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (MTHA) and the Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MHBA) today announced that they have come to a 10-year agreement for sustained racing at Pimlico Race Course and Laurel Park.

Award Winning Racing Journalist And Historian Joe Kelly Passes

 

BALTIMORE, 11-27-12---The Maryland racing community lost one of its most prominent members when award-winning journalist and racing historian Joseph B. Kelly passed away Mondayat Stella MarisRehabilitation and Hospiceafter a short battle with cancer. He was 94 years old.

A lifelong resident of Baltimore, Joe Kelly covered horse racing for nearly 70 years.

Pimlico's Totally Thoroughbred Horse Show A Huge Success

BALTIMORE, 07-14-12---With nearly 800 entries in 16 classes,the inaugural Totally Thoroughbred Horse Show today at Pimlico Race Course “exceeded all expectations”, according to show manager Georganne Hale. The event was the brainchild of Hale, the Maryland Jockey Club’s racing secretary, and Adena Springs retirement program manager Stacie Clark-Rogers.

Totally Thoroughbred Horse Show Coming To Pimlico Race Course On Saturday, July 14

BALTIMORE, 06-25-12---The Maryland Jockey Club and Adena Springs will host the Totally Thoroughbred Horse Show on the Pimlico Race Course infield on Saturday, July 14. Admission is free. Proceeds from the event will benefit three local Thoroughbred aftercare programs.

Maryland Racing Commission Agrees Unanimously To Change Secretariat's 1973 Preakness Stakes To A Record 1:53 After Hearing

BALTIMORE, 06-19-12---The Maryland Racing Commission voted Tuesday afternoon in a special hearing at Laurel Park that 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat, who set records that still stand at the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, also set the record in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course 39 years ago.

In a unanimous 7-0 decision, the official time of the Preakness was changed from 1:54 2/5 to 1:53. Secretariat is one of 11 thoroughbreds to win the Triple Crown, with victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont as a 3-year-old.

Pimlico Announces Final Spring Meet Handle Figures

BALTIMORE, 05-23-12---The Maryland Jockey Club concluded its spring meeting at Pimlico Race Course last weekend, posting average wagering figures which were 9% higher than the 2011 spring meet. The average daily handle went from $4.72million to $5.17million. The stand featured 29 live racing dates and 21 simulcast days.

BALTIMORE, 05-23-12---The eight-week Pimlico spring meeting ended Saturday afternoon with Abel Castellano, Jamie Ness and Midwest Thoroughbred, Inc. winning individual titles. The 29-day stand began at the historic home of the Preakness Stakes (G1) on March 30.
